Tony Awards 2019

The hype about the Tony Awards is nothing compared to the atmosphere surrounding the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes or the MTV Music Awards. But that is an unforgivable oversight. Broadway with its 41 super professional theatres in New York and the artists that achieve absolute perfection on their stages – that’s what the Tony Awards are all about.

Perhaps most of you don’t know that the official name of the Tony Award is Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre. The medallions are named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, the co-founder of the American Theatre Wing.

Let’s see what were the highlights during this year’s ceremony.

The location was Radio City Music Hall in New York. The colourful show was hosted by James Corden. Hadestown received the Best Musical award, Oklahoma! was the Best Revival of a Musical and The Ferryman won in the Best Play category.

Hadestown won seven more Tony medallions, so perhaps you are willing to learn a bit more about it. As the name suggests, the musical is an adaptation of the ancient Greek myth for Orpheus and Eurydice – the one where Orpheus journeys to the underworld in order to save his fiancée. Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) didn’t win the prize for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical – even though she was a nominee in that category – but André De Shields who portrayed Hermes got the award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.

What happened on the red carpet?
